Move-Together e.V.

What is it all about? Which objectives do we pursue?

We organise festivals in a beautiful and distinct environment, where people of all ages are not only invited to celebrate with us, but to get to know each other, to enjoy nature and to inspire and get inspired culturally. However, we also want to raise awareness for various social wrongs (e.g. a lack of opportunities for free development of young people, the situation of criminalised people in Germany, etc.) and fight them together with other institutions. This is why all the contributors to the festival work voluntarily. The earnings of the festivals have always been donated to different institutions (so far to: handicapped artworks, Cafe 104/Bayrischer Flüchtlingsrat, Freiraum Dachau, Rumänienhilfe, baobab familiy e.V. etc.). We consider intercultural fusions to be an essential part of (Bavarian) culture and as a vital component of everyday life.

When was the charity founded and what were intentions and background?

The first festival was organised in 2001 by a bunch of friends. The reason was simply the enthusiasm for shaping and organising a festival from scratch and for supporting a project we already knew and liked (Baobab Family Project). The passion for creating something in a “do-it-yourself” manner and for celebrating together in the process was and still is the backbone of this unique constellation.

Our target group

Young people, families, and people of all ages: locals have been growing accustomed to it and consider it as “our village festival”. However, our more culturally interested guests (e.g. members of reggae, dub and other subcultures) come from all over Bavaria and even from further away: they consider and respect it as a musical and cultural celebration. This is what our real intension has been from the beginning, but of course we are proud and repeatedly surprised ourselves to succeed in connecting both factors.

Contributors

Actual organisational staff: ca. 20 members (organisation as early as 12 months beforehand); construction, deconstruction, etc.: ca. 80 members (2 weeks including construction and deconstruction). All contributors work voluntarily!

Events

We have organised festivals on a regular basis in the forest with sandpit near Odelzhausen since 2001. However, we keep consciously changing the concept of our festivals. Some of these events have had 400, some of them up to 2000 visitors (this is the maximum anyhow as any more visitors would influence the atmosphere negatively and be harmful to the ecological balance of the area).

Funding Move-Together e.V.

We receive no funding by public or private sponsors whatsoever, we only accept minor donations from time to time. Despite of these small amounts we have had to privately bear the risk of pre-funding. This is how we have been able to constantly meet our objective of preserving financial and creative independence.

What’s special about Move-Together e.V.?

All contributors to the festival work voluntarily. There are no restrictions by an overall concept – every single contributor can realise maximum personal creativity – this is why even the core organisers cannot tell until shortly before the festival which small or big surprises will be featured in the end (in 2010 for example, two of our younger contributors surprised us all and our guests with an amazing labyrinth created from willow branches or an unbooked band played spontaneously in the forest etc.). Everyone can contribute to the festival with their skills and live their imaginations. And somehow we all manage it to create an overall successful experience for everybody – with all artists in the beginning performing without earning any money and most of them still renouncing fees for the good cause.

During all these years, different initiatives and friendships have grown stronger (most of our contributors and initiatives come from near Odelzhausen, from Munich, some of them from Augsburg and Freising and even Freiburg and our most remote supporter lives as far away as Alaska).

People who used to attend the first festival as guests are now actively contributing to the festival – our youngest contributors are only 15 years old, the oldest almost 50. Some of them were inspired by this voluntary work and are now working professionally in event organisation and engineering. All of them work voluntarily on the festival in their holidays, of course.

Initiatives we formerly supported with the earnings keep coming back to this event, organising informational stands and contributing to the shape of Riding Higher. In the cause of all these years, this resulted in a lively community: an overall and close connection of various friendships.
